Our Douglas Fir products are left untreated because their high resin content is a highly effective preservative, which means that additional treatment with chemical pesticides and fungicides is not required. Because of this unique characteristic, Douglas Fir, amongst other redwoods, is now being favoured for the use of organic planters because of the lack of chemical preservatives and its durability to withstand rotting even when it in direct contact with soil. 

In most cases, this timber will last for decades untreated, however, we do not discourage the use of clear-coat timber preservatives to further extend its lifespan.

Douglas Fir has a favourable appearance due to its colour range, which can vary from a combination of whites and reds to just red (cut from the heartwood) when freshly sawn. However, when left untreated, the colours naturally turn to a silver-grey when exposed to the sun. The timber will retain some of its colour when used internally.
